Portfolio Advice Day
Portfolio Advice Day 2006 took place on the 8th February at the Institute of Contemporary Arts (ICA).
The event was attended by 76 tutors from 23 creative arts institutions. 550 students from across London studying level 3 art and design courses were given the opportunity to receive one-on-one advice on how to put together their portfolios.
Tutors gave portfolio advice in a range of subjects from Fashion, Graphics, Photography and Media and Broadcasting. There was also an interactive session run by actors on interview techniques, finance workshops and a special workshop for art teachers.
Audition Days
In March 2006 Central School of Speech and Drama alongside Laban, Rose Bruford College and Trinity College of Music ran a three-day auditions skills event. The event was open to 100 Year 11 students across the whole of London.
The aim of the days was to develop audition skills for performers in dance, music and drama. The workshops helped students develop an understanding of the audition process and helped students prepare for a performing arts audition.
Fashion Futures 2
Fashion Futures 2 is a collaborative project between Aimhigher and Fashion Awareness Direct. The project is now running in its second year. The project runs in three stages; a Saturday school for 40 students, a summer school for 15 students held at The London College of Fashion and finally, arising from the summer school, an overall winner chosen by a jury panel, who has their collection made and sold by the retail partner George at ASDA.
The final catwalk displaying the 15 finalists work takes place at the Fashion Textile Museum.
Somali Cultural Education Programme (MAGUURAAN) Arts Learning Partnership
MAGUURAAN targeted Somali students from the boroughs of Ealing and Camden. The aim of the two, week long projects was to raise aspirations about the general value of HE and the specific opportunities for developing arts based learning in HE. Students were introduced to a variety of art and cultural practices with specialist partner HE staff, local authorities, teachers and Somali artists.
The artistic co-ordination of the programme was run through an experienced Somali-based cultural organisation which ensured effective community liaison, student recruitment, and involvement of families in young peoples learning.
Central Saint Martins ‘Find out about Fashion’
In December 2005 50 teachers and Connexions advisers attended 'Find out about Fashion' held at Central Saint Martins. The event aimed to inform teachers and Connexions advisers, working in areas with low HE participation rates about the ways into fashion, the fashion student experience and the fashion industry. Speakers included the creative editor of Arena magazine and up and coming fashion designer Sara Berman, who is regularly featured in Vogue. Fashion students also talked delegates through their projects and there was the rare opportunity to see a fashion show of students' work.
The Pulse from the Street to the Screen
Rose Bruford College and Ravensbourne College of Design and Communication joined forces in the Summer 2005 to produce a thirty minute arts based magazine TV show. Students at Ravensbourne created all the elements that go towards making a successful television programme from programming graphics, edited location reports, live studio interviews and live musical performance. Students at Rose Bruford supplied the performance part of the TV programme which focussed on carnival skills, costume construction, musical skills and dance and movement.
Create a House
Create a House was a collaborative project with Central London Partnership aimed to raise awareness and interest in construction based courses and careers around the themes of planning and architecture, crafts and construction and interiors. The programmes developed vocationally relevant skills including team work and project management skills.
The project was launched with an initial conference on the theme of building a house and using this process to draw in skills, activities and professions involved in the process of building a house. This was then followed by three Saturday workshops around the themes of planning and architecture, crafts and construction and interiors. The work from these workshops was then displayed in a final exhibition.
